SCC & RACK- What Are They? SSC is an initialism for Safe Sane Consensual. RACK is an acronym for Risk Aware Consensual Kink. Both of these terms are about practicing BDSM safely. They are terms used widely in the community to promote education and awareness. If you’re vetting a playmate asking them about these terms, and how they implement them, is an important part of the vetting process. Both of these terms emphasize consent. Consent means that every party involved in a scene, and every party exposed to a scene are offering uncoerced consent to be part of the scene. So they sound alike, what’s the difference? In a colloquial sense, there isn’t much difference. You’ll probably hear them used interchangeably. However, the main difference between the two is that RACK is thought the better recognize the inherent danger in certain activities and supports engaging in such activities when the risks are understood and precautions are taken to minimize the risks. Take breath play for example. There is no way to engage in breath play with 100% safety because even if you are perfectly educated about proper technique there is always the very low risk that someone has a pre-existing condition they don’t know about that is triggered by the breath play, creating a<b> medical </font></b>emergency. RACK recognizes the inherent risk in certain behaviors. RACK is about minimizing that risk, and taking precautions where applicable (for example: having a knife/shears nearby when you are restraining with rope/tape in the case of emergency) but not steering clear of the activities altogether. You can compare this to driving. There is no way to drive with 100% safety. You can take precautions to minimize risk, such as obeying stop signs, abiding by the speed limit, and wearing a seat belt, but there will always be factors out of your control. Does that mean SSC is wrong? NO! First off, SSC is open to interpretation. There is no saying that ’Safe’ means 100% safe. Perhaps there really is no such thing, to begin with anyway. SSC, on the other hand, DOES promote the practice of ’Sane’ kink. That implies things RACK doesn’t. Sane kink means that both parties are capable of making rational decisions and offering consent. It recognizes that someone so far into subspace that they cannot recall simple facts like their name, cannot offer consent. It recognizes the very real existence of abusers and sociopaths, who though able to offer consent are not sane and therefore unsafe to engage with. Both of these terms are important, and they both have a place in our community. Know that they are, and what they mean.
