How does a sub male differ from a boyfriend..being serious here

I've now run into 3 different Dommes that say they want a submissive . But in reality it feels like they really just want a boyfriend that they have some control over.

So maybe someone can articulate the difference.

I guess it is the lifestyles version of being put in the friend zone..
The relationship comes first and foremost and ...? An afterthought

 Surely a "boyfriend" implies vanilla, so no D/s traits. Whereas a "submissive male" is D/s, so that's a completely different dynamic. Appreciate that doesn't actually answer your question, but the answer would need to be from the Dommes. Would they be happy without the consensual D/s dynamic in their relationship?
