There is a British touring company putting on the stage production of Charlie and the chocolate factory/ Willie wonka...

And instead of gender swapping and making the title character Charlie a girl or black or lgbtq or handicapped etc...( to which I am still cool with)

They literally hired 2 boys and 2 girls to play Charlie as a boy..

And I thought to myself....from a production pov...it shouldn't matter really. At a young age it shouldn't ruin anything..
Can't girls play boys...and to a lesser extent boys play female roles..

We're basically seeing it now in movies like Peter and wendy...where Wendy is a still girl but assumes the boy's traditional swashbuckling role
and peter?? He stands off to the side looking bored.. literally the kid cant act and has 1 emotion.

They make Peter pan into the real villian of the film.

So what's the real benefit of casting a boy/ being a boy..

If one can cast a girl as a boy and get tons of free press..
Or simply put the girl in the boy's traditional lead role..

Why do we even need Peter pan...why do we need to see boys in movies..could we not enjoy an all female cast of Lord of the flies???

But then again I thought just like transgender athletes...a rent you robbing boys of their uniqueness..of oppertunity

I mean if anyone can be a boy...Play a boys role...then
How do we then define a

Boy..more or less a boy's role..

Could there not just be a community of girls...to which I believe one town has nothing but girls..like in denmark???

My point is imagine if we said race doesn't matter in a character or actor...then aren't we robbing the character of its hertiage..it's uniqueness..
Couldn't tiger lily be played by an asian

Imagine if we took the story out of england..substituted the Cadbury chocolate factory...
And reimagined the story in Pennsylvania with the hersey corp.

Some would say it's still the same story...

Or is it??

Think of Harry potter but hogswort was in Compton..
Harry potter's world just got a lot darker and more latino..

When you start race swapping and redefining a characters origins...

Aren't you really limiting oppertunity..

And I'm not talking about adding girls to the " lost boys " cast..

By reducing Peters role...you literally could have hired a kid off the street..
And I think they did..he is that bad..dull as a piece of drift wood.
As long as you got a girl to really shine as the lead and carry the film.

So why not just rename the film...

Wendy

And be done with it
