Musing Upon Mystical Muses

"Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns
driven time and again off course, once he had plundered
the hallowed heights of Troy" Homer, Book I of The Odyssey

What exactly is a Muse?

In Greek mythology, the Muses are a sisterhood of goddesses or spirits, their number set at nine, who embody the arts and inspire the creation process with their graces through remembered and improvised song and stage, writing, traditional music, and dance. Some have said the Muses were the daughters of Zeus, and some historians say they were born of the union of Aphrodite and Ares. It makes no matter, they were and have been held on a pedestal by man as the feminine mystique personified.

Many Enlightenment figures sought to re-establish a ""Cult of the Muses"" in the eighteenth century. A famous Masonic lodge in pre-Revolutionary Paris was called Les Neuf Soeurs ("nine sisters"), that is, the nine Muses), and was attended by Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Danton and other influential Enlightenment figures.

The canonical nine Muses, with their fields of patronage, have been established since the Renaissance, and are:
Calliope: the heroine
Clio: the historian
Erato: the lover or erotic poetess
Euterpe: the music and lyric poetess
Melpomene: the tragic
Polyhymnia or Polymnia: the singer
Terpsichore: the dancer
Thalia: the comedienne
Urania: the astronomer
The poet Sappho of Lesbos was given the compliment of being called ""the tenth muse"" by Plato. The phrase has become a somewhat conventional compliment paid to female poets since that time.

"The lie, as a virtue, a principle, is eternal; the lie, as a recreation, a solace, a refuge in time of need, the fourth Grace, the tenth Muse, man's best and surest friend is immortal" Mark Twain

People talk of Muses, and some even claim that title to place upon themselves. Whilst pondering Muses and writing, it dawned upon me that anyone can be a Muse to someone whom they inspire with either positive or negative effects. Much like the Sirens, a Muse can entice without giving the promise of what is sought.Or, the opposite holds true of the positive end of the spectrum as well. A Muse can inspire great works of art, beauty in all forms, and empowerment.

But, true talents, which draw the object of your affection to you, makes you a Muse. When looking down that list, I realize how many parts of the nine that I see in the those whom I know.
They are my Muses, much like I am a Muse.
There is no gauge or competition for how much talent it takes to be such.

Are you someone's Muse? And what talent do you possess?

This little rabit hole will go so far over heads probably that I might as well comment on my own post so it isn't barren This theory of muses was born in my head before the knowledge of what the pussy craft was by name.
It's an intricate and yet very important part of what I am conveying throughout the blog Now figure that riddle out!

He did say the damndest things! When I come through Connecticut next time, you have a deal. As long as you promise to let me treat you to an afternoon or evening of incredibly interesting conversation My favorite restaurants in Hartford are Burton's Grill, New York Market & Deli for Bagel and lox, Black Bamoboo, and Pond House Cafe, I always remember the restaurants when we go to towns because I have to eat dairy and gluten free

Poetess

Thank you for a very interesting lesson

I sadly, am none of those Muses but do try to contemplate many things

A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing. George Bernard Shaw

I believe I fall into the category of Euterpe: the music and lyric poetess. As I am obsessed with poetry and music lyrics. I'm not sure if I've ever been anyone's Muse, but, I find the piece fascinating.xx
