Sense of humor required

I came across this article in London this morning as I'm preparing to head back to the US and it made me laugh. A sense of humor is required so you'll have to put the usual knee-jerk, mouth-frothing response impulses aside

"Liberal Democrat-run Woking Borough Council on Wednesday issued a section 114 notice (e.g. bankruptcy) formally declaring it is unable to deliver a balanced budget with the £16 MILLION it has available for 2023-24.

The accumulated £1.2 BILLION shortfall in Woking’s finances also means it is unable to meet its budgetary requirements in the coming years." (denomination emphasis mine)

Now... can you have a more aptly named "Liberal Democrat" council than "Woking" that is over a billion in debt when it normally operates with a very low 10s of millions budget? I would love to see where they pissed away all that money

As Maggie Thatcher said, " The trouble with socialism is that sooner or later, you run out of other peoples' money."

Wow. That's kinda incredible... A Billion Dollar Borough.
[insert quick math] that accumulated 1.2B works out to approximately £11,500 debt generated per resident (2021 Census data shows Woking's population around 104,000)

I'm right with ya, Damsel; The Woking Borough Council's website has their Finances posted/available for download going back to 2015 and I'm going to give it a skim when I need a change of pace, later this morning.

What can I say?

Incredible but not that surprising unfortunately.

Some things are almost too funny to be true!

I went to secondary school in the UK. My Dad took me and dropped me off. We rented a car to get there from London. The man who gave us the key asked where we were going? My Dad said Bury St Edmunds. The man said, I did not know he was dead...

That's just typical UK humour.

Dig a little deeper and you’ll learn that the Lib Dems have only been in control since May 2022; prior to that the Tories led the borough council for a decade.
Sadly, in the UK, as in the US, being conservative no longer means being conservative with the taxpayers’ money.

Like I said... sense of humor required And it was a little vague (typical of UK articles) about whether it was due to long term investment losses or a shift in investment in the last year that created the losses. Not really to appreciate the name/label humor
