Be forewarned, a Australian Open Rant!!

Just a FYI... pac has followed tennis for forty years since Bjorn Borg played... So... she feels like she knows the subject matter quite well... And before anyone starts any shit... This is not about mandatory vaccines, or whether or not t o get a vaccine... Please don't politicize my blog!!

As all of us tennis enthusiasts get excited for the Australian Open. It's been hard t o just enjoy that as Novak Djokovic has been monopolizing all the headlines. There is no doubt he's a great player. Since 2008 he has won the Australian Open nine times. And one would wonder his results for the five years he was not able t o play? Not only is he seeking t o defend his title from last year. He's also seeking the Grand Slam record of twenty-one. As of right now he is tied with R. Nadal, and R. Federer...

Regardless of all of this... How is he above a country's entry requirements? Novak, boasted on social media before he even got on the plane, how he got a medical exemption t o enter Australia. Let's not forget... The Australian Open informed all players months earlier that they needed to be vaccinated t o enter the country. And any kind of medical exemption would have t o be approved by two independent medical boards and only for non-frivolous reasons. Out of twenty six requests only five were approved.

So imagine Novak's shock when his visa got revoked at the airport, and the court wars started. Which included protests from his parents, the Serbian President, and the numerous Australians who are flat out pissed! After enduring months of strict lockdowns, why should Novak be able to waltz into Australia? Because he's a great tennis player?

There still is no guarantee Novak will play in The Australian Open. As his circumstances before arriving in Australia are under scrutiny right now. But know this... If his visa is revoked again, he might in effect be banned from entering Australia for three years! High stakes being played out in Australia right now for sure...

All this bullshit because of a shot. If Novak didn't want t o comply with Australia's rules... He should have stayed in Serbia, Spain, or wherever the hell he was!

I think the Aus TV host summed it up well…an entitled asshole….but reflected in many other so called sporting stars…rules don’t apply to them…they surrround themselves with an entourage that NEVER says no…because their livelihood literally depends on the star paying them…so why would you be surprised that they kick off when some one does..

And that’s before you start on the bullshit anti vaxx conspiracy rubbish they think they have the right to spew..because they are sports stars…who obviously know far more than the experts..

As you put it…if you don’t like the rule then f@@@k off home…

pac369 replies on 1/11/2022 3:33 pm:
Thanks Boggles!

I would like to hear the newscasts in Australia about this.

Agreed though... Novak went to court while the goverment was sending
other players home. So... when you have enough money and prestige it's amazing what you can do...

Pac,

No argument here. It's really hard to understand. I guarantee you in Borg's time, he wouldn't have even thought about refusing vaccination.

This trend is very disturbing. I'm glad I'm 71. If I was in my 20s now I'd be very concerned about what the world is gonna look like 30 yrs from now.
Not politics, just what I see. IMHO.

Australian has been in some very serious lockdowns. The people of Australia have suffered much and I don't really care how well he plays tennis; he didn't follow the rules

Its not just Tennis players. Here in the UK so called Football stars and all the hangers on have been allowed to travel all over Europe without isolating or testing because they are able to kick a bag of wind around for 90 min. Everyday Joe has been locked up not being able to see their families at xmas, birthdays, deaths ect The so called sporting elite need to spend some time in the real world. Also normal travellers to Aus do not have an army of lawyers to fight their case they are put on the next plane home no argument you go. He should do the right thing and withdraw and leave.

pac369 replies on 1/11/2022 3:39 pm:
Thanks for the comments d!

It is unfortunate that players of any sport have free rein
when citizens are still locked down. If nothing else keep them in some kind of bubble to restrict their movements...

Novak received the exemption
the tournament officials required
for him to come and compete.
If you're asking if he received preferential
treatment because he's the defending
Australian open champion . . hell yes.
Did they do it because its Novak Djokovic,
not at all!!
It would have been done for Borj, Conner or
McEnroe, its not about the person its about the
Australian Open Championship.
He did comply with the rules and was granted an
exemption. The issue was The Australian Border
Force said Djokovic did not provide the right
evidence to gain entry into the country.
It seems the tournament and the country
hadn't gotten on the same page.

pac369 replies on 1/11/2022 3:45 pm:
OK hard...

I agree Novak got the ok from the tennis federation.
But he did not get approved from the goverment. Which seems like something you might have wanted to double check?

So yeah... the goverment and tennis officials are not on the same page. New info is also coming out about where he was the 14 days before flying to Australia. This story is not done yet for sure...

I totally agree with everything you said. He has pissed off the majority of Aussies who have adhered to the vaccine requests. 90% of the population has had the double dose, Why should he be exempt?

pac369 replies on 1/11/2022 3:57 pm:
Thank you yd...

I don't think he should be exempt at all...

I think there should have only been 2 choices. Be vaccinated, or don't come to Australia! By allowing this exception you can see the can of worms it has opened...

Well written and objective point of view

As an aussie I feel that Tennis Australia was looking for a loop hole to let Novak play and they found one.

The only mistake my Government made was letting Novak board the plane to come to Australia which they could have done , had they done that Novak would never landed in the Australia.

Novak won the court case due to a technicality on how he was treated throughout the detention rather than having met the criteria to enter the country legally.

If everyone else officials, workers, umpires, public who is going to the tennis need to be double vaccinated surely we can expect that the rules would apply to the players

Ordinary aussies are sick and tired of the few entitled people giving preferential treatment whilst we had to be be model citizen inmates.

pac369 replies on 1/11/2022 8:28 pm:
Thank you P...

Not sure how your goverment could have stopped him from boarding a plane in another country? But I totally appreciate your thoughts..

Of course how he was treated in detention certainly helped to fuel his court case and the case of public opinion...

Just seems to many that most aussies still think he's wrong? Just my 2 cents..

hardtop4you 65M

1/11/2022 4:49 pm

I think there should have only been 2 choices. Be vaccinated, or don't come to Australia!

Then that ultimatum should have been given to the tennis federation in a timely manner so they could make other arrangements. If host countries disagree with
the federations covid vax policy they should take it up with them waay before players arrive with what they've been told is an exemption. This is clearly an Australian Open fuck up. Taking someones visa and ability to earn a living without due process would most likely result in a swift player boycott of the event.

pac369 replies on 1/11/2022 8:37 pm:
I agree with every word you said hard, except the last sentence...
No chance of players boycotting because of Novak! Did you hear Nadal's comments about "consequences for our actions"? No matter what the players say, it's probably not what they are thinking...

First place money is 4.4 million . . would you like to pay the law suit he'll file against the event if after giving him an exemption they don't allow him to play??

pac

I wonder why a tennis player thinks he ( or she) knows more about vaccination and immunology than, say, Tony Fauci? ???

It appears he was poorly treated by the Border Force on his first night here and that is inexcusable but but Djokovic has done nothing to endear himself to fair minded people either!

pac369 replies on 1/11/2022 8:48 pm:
Great question Jenny!

And I wish I knew the answer to that... It seems logical to me

the guy is phenomenal talent that completed a GS (very few have done that!) be a travesty if he doesn’t play!
IF he doesn’t show or have any symptoms has been quarantined follows guidelines l think he should be allowed to play period!

pac369 replies on 1/11/2022 9:11 pm:
I appreciate your thoughts bdsm...

And he is a great talent... If he just had covid in December it's unlikely he would have symptoms now. He also didn't quarantine for 14 days before entering Australia either. So... to say he's circumventing the rules is a understatement!

This may explain how he could he have stopped from board

There will be people from Australian Border Force who stand behind the airline staff at the departing port, ready to pull passengers aside or direct staff to remove people from the plane if they have any concerns.

"They could have stopped Djokovic landing (in Australia) or boarding the plane if they had these concerns only a few hours earlier," Mr Rizvi said.

I appreciate you sharing this info about
Novak not even boarding the plane in the

The Victorian state government, Tennis Australia officials and the tennis federation are the ones who told him he could come to Australia. None of them have jurisdiction over the issue of visas, and that part is a travesty for Novaxx. However, it appears he has lied about his movements, lied on his visa application (which he blames on his staff filling in the documents), and gone to a photo shoot while knowing he was just confirmed as covid positive. This last action in contravention to Serbian law. He should pay for his actions. As for the court battle he won, it was only over his treatment by border force officials, and in no way gave him any right to be issued a visa.

pac369 replies on 1/12/2022 7:53 am:
Thanks for clarifying the "visa" issue taste.

Really unfortunate these organizations are not on the same page.
It appears a "ultimate" decision will be coming shortly.
His actions concerning his where abouts and what he did or didn't do after he was infected is concerning at the very least.

And I honestly just have no clue anymore what will happen!
