John Reinhard Weguelin "Lesbian" - 1878 Oil on Canvas LESBIA - THE WOMAN AND THE MUSE. Clodia (94-45 B.C.) was a refined and cultured Roman nobility. Described as free and exterminated, she was the sister of the tribune of the plebe Publio Clodius Pulcro, ally of Caesar and bitter enemy of Cicero. In the “Pro Caelio” prayer Cicerone defends Marco Celio Rufo accused by Clodia, his lover, of having tried to poison her. Cicero attacked her sharply painting her as known for adventure, orgs and adulterers. Clodia was a lover of characters like Caesar and Pompeo, as well as Catullus. The poet sang it in his lyrics under the pseudonym Lesbian, in homage to the Greek poet Sappho of the island of Lesbian "We live, my Lesbian, and we love, and the muggs of the old moralists All together, we don’t value them a bit. Days go down and then they come back; but us when the short light of life falls, We must sleep just one endless night. Give me a thousand kisses, then a hundred more, then another thousand, then another hundred, then a thousand, then another hundred again. When will we have given thousands, we’ll confuse the sums, so we don’t know, and why no wicked envy us, knowing that such a great gift of kisses exists. " (Catullo - Carme 5) |
