Indeed they are. Can't remember which zoo that has the female tiger and male lion that bred, but it happened. Seems when pretty much any species gets hot and bothered, they just look for a release...

 Male lions will use their roar to scare off/intimadate intruders and warn the pride of potential danger. It's also a show of power among other males.
A Lion roars can be heard for up to 5 miles away.

In my book, that is what is known as being tested. They say the roar can be heard from 5 miles away, in my experience I am not sure that is true. I have lived in proximity to lions ... so if it is true, they do not roar often.
