Career Success for the Next Generation

As generically and as simple as I can explain, here is a template for how I see career paths working in the future:

Step 0: Know what you enjoy and what you are good at BEFORE graduating high school.

You MUST make the decision as young as you possibly can. No mind changing, no bullshit finding yourself, no distractions. Make a decision, commit, and understand you will be working your career for a very long time. Choose wisely.

Step 1: Develop a Plan BEFORE graduating high school

Have a vision for your future. This absolutely depends on step 0, but step 0 does not address what is next in your career. Without going into detail, keep these things in mind to be part of your plan:

- Education
- Training
- Volunteer Work
- Internships
- Special Projects
- Achievements
- Relocation

Step 1a: Financial literacy

Many investment books out there. My advice for someone new.

IVV,
VOO,
SPLG

Careful exploring options trading. Real careful. Consider skipping this part, but if you want to learn how to manage risk. Start here:

SPY

Step 2: Perfecting your resume

How do you think you are going to get your first job? Yes, if you know somebody, lucky you. For the rest of us, this is the critical step. Paying someone else to write it is not going to cut it. Content is king and I hope you executed a good plan, because you will probably compete with thousands of people for good jobs. Keep it organized, clean, concise, bulletproof, and be able to convince others that you know the job and can master the job.

Step 3: The First Interview

Your resume got you the interview, do not blow it. Unless you are interviewing with google or apple for a highly technical role involving the creation of complex algorithms to do all kinds of weird stuff, this part only has one goal.

Communication.

Stick to talking about your resume. Try to answer questions with experiences where you actually demonstrated the ability. You will get questions about teamwork, communication, skillsets, and whatever is on your resume. Prepare for it. Keep this phrase in mind though:

I do not know, but I can learn.

Step 4: Your first real offer

Take it. Take it. Take it. Ok fine, that may not be true. However, the point remains, your first job is the most difficult part of your whole career. Many people fail to get this far. Keep this in mind if you want to reject the offer.

Step 5: On the job training

Learn new skills and processes, accomplish new things, and keep track of what is important and applies to any job related to your field.. You now have a new resume entry to perfect and you should learn a new vocabulary. New vocabularies demonstrate ability to communicate and understanding.

Step 6: Your Next Job

This one can loop forever, but just keep the purpose in mind. You are only looking for your next best alternative. Your current job is never guaranteed, and you have every right to look for and take better opportunities. It is your career, go as far as you want to go. Realize, you will not get everything you want, but you will not get anything if you do not ask or try.

One last piece of advice:

Luck is a factor, make your own luck.

That sounds like some good advice.
