RUNS ALL WAREHOUSES

the time i tried to crash a sold out illegal warehouse rave.

not a kinky/sexy story but a fun one from my misspent youth.

blog to follow in first comment.

Back in my 20's and early 30's i went to hundreds and hundreds of underground raves. It wasn't all about the drugs---it was all about the music. But, the drugs did (ahem) enhance things and the whole combination of drugs and underground/illegal raves lead to some interesting experiences.

Back in the 90's and early 00's there was an infamous venue, La Casa. One of those under the freeway in LA spots. It was a large building with multiple levels. i had been there a handful of times.

So this one night. It wasn't just any old underground. THIS was the PREMIER underground event for Jungle/Drum N Bass of the season. my favorite DJ's were going to be performing together debuting all of their new dubplates that were featured on their new mixtape release. i was beyond hyped and HAD to be there.

Once my (then) boyfriend and i arrived to the venue, we realized that EVERYONE ELSE felt the same way. The line was huge and stretched around the building. We could hear the booming bass and see quickly moving flashes of multi colored lights through the many windows and doors.

We take our acid and get in line.

The line is moving slow but everyone is happy and in a party mood. The big, burly line security guards are passing along balloons filled from a large tank. Eventually a few very large balloons make it to us.

The nitrous oxide contained inside serves to kick in the acid and we are starting to feel EXTRA hyped. But the line hasn't moved in a while. i decide to go to the front and see if i can find out what's going on.

BAD NEWS: the venue is over capacity and they aren't letting anyone in until people start leaving. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my Junglist Heart dropped. What are we gonna do???

i go back to my place in line with my boyfriend and tell him the news. We are in quite a spot---in a huge crowded line under a freeway next to a large abandoned building in downtown LA. Eyes dilated and the acid is coming on quickly. We decide to stay in line and see what happens, i mean, what else could we do?

We're still wrapped around the side of the building. Eventually, we see a person jump the fence, climb up the fire escape, and enter through one of the doors on the 2nd floor. Sucess!!!

We look at each other. We know it's our only hope of getting in.

Without much forethought or plan, we jump the fence...climb the fire escape, and become separated. i make it up to the 2nd or 3rd floor and open the door...one of my platform sneakered shoes is inside the venue and i can FEEL the music, the intro to my favorite song on the new mixtape is playing. In front of me i see the darkness of the cavernous space punctuated with the moving, swirling lights.

i go to take another step and at the same time, feel a hand close around my back.

One of the big burly security guards. He caught me!

i start to protest. "But my FRIENDS ARE IN THERE!!!" "How will i get home??" i try to use every excuse i can think of, and to be honest, at this point i DID think that my boyfriend had made it inside, so i was panicking.

But the big burly security guard has seen it all before and silently ushers me back down the fire escape stairs and through a gate.

Now i'm devastated AND a little panicked being separated from my boyfriend. At least i had the keys to the car, but still. This was before cell phones. What do i do now? Get back in line? Go to the car?

A few minutes later, i see my boyfriend. Turns out he didn't even get as far as i did---he ended up on a lower level that didn't even have a door.

_________

So now we're still faced with the conundrum of what to do. Things are getting more intense and unruly as more and more people in the crowded, boisterous line realize that no one else is getting in.

We watch as others try to jump the fence and bust in. Some make it, some do not.

Shit is getting real and self-preservation kicks in. It's time to GO. A ravers instinct: get out of the spot before the spot gets blown. Dealing with the cops or fire department is NOT what we wanna do right now.

_________

We jump in my car and through sheer force of will, i get on the freeway and get us home. Full of youthful bravado and acid induced euphoria. We bump the new mixtape all the way home.

Very reminiscent of a scene from the (excellent) 1999 film "Go."
If you have not seen it, you should. There are several clever intersecting plot lines, some of which involve raves and drug-induced hallucinations.
It sounds like you lived that life, so you would probably enjoy the film.

Yes! i have seen "Go" and many other rave films from that era!! And yes, i did live the raver life (i was also playing in local rock bands and working at a record store so my life revolved around music, musicians, gigs, raves and art shows). Good times.

Yes, I too miss the days when more of my life revolved around music. Being a bit older than you, I spent a lot of time in the late 70s - early 80s seeing punk and "New Wave" bands in their formative years. Good times indeed.
