Many of us have been in a scene where we want to just keep going on and on. Everything is going perfect, both partners are in ecstasy and no one wants to think of stopping. Here is when the silent danger of fatigue becomes something to be alert to. No matter how well conditioned a body, everyone falls victim to fatigue. Runners and athletes push through the fatigue. But they have breaks usually built into the events they are participating in. Even runner have tricks to “rest” while keeping the pace. Many things during a scene can cause and build fatigue, especially bondage. Muscles and tendons in stringent bondage are tensed and stretched, and sooner or later will get to the point of fatigue. Prolonged scenes of any kind can produce fatigue for both partners, physically, mentally and emotionally. All three types can lead to problems. The obvious fatigue is usually the physical. Muscles and tendons get to the breaking point and go from fatigue to aches, then stains and pulls. Some of which can take extended periods of time to heal, which neither partner would like since it prevents further play while recuperating. Mental fatigue can be easily ignored, but it causes mistakes, miscalculations and can lead to unneeded injury much like intoxication. Emotional fatigue can cause some bad feelings or resentment that a partner didn’t speak up or act sooner to avoid issues. Even outside of scenes, everyday life can lead to these three fatigues. Stress from job, school, relationship and everything else under the sun can lead to fatigue. It’s always a good idea for partners to monitor each other for stress and fatigue as part of caring for the health of the other. As a sufferer of CFS/ME for almost 30 years, I can attest to the problems fatigue can cause. The thing about fatigue is that it builds silently from combinations of daily things and often has an invisible line for a limit that can change from day to day. And as we age, becomes more and more common. Like many things in BDSM, it’s a matter of awareness. Simply getting some rest, or taking a break during a scene (changing the bondage position) can work wonders for avoiding fatigue issues. © 4/25/23 Ronald Dirienzo
