Most of us in the Community are aware of mental health issue for submissives that have been traumatized. But not all mental health issues arise from trauma. Depression, anxiety and other issues are prevalent in today’s society, and probably were in times past, it was just that not enough people sought help. Of course, the Dominant, being responsible for the health and wellbeing of the submissive is also responsible for the mental health of the submissive. It takes patience to help a person through mental health issues. Just because they may be seeing a professional, doesn’t mean the Dominant can wash their hands of the issue. But what about Dominants with mental health issues? First off, like any other thing in the life of a Dominant, mental health issues should be discussed with prospective submissives. In fact it is a good thing for a submissive to ask about during vetting. The submissive has a right to know about the mental stability of a prospective partner. Now, hopefully, the Dominant, just like a submissive, is seeing a professional and taking medication for any mental health issues they have. Just like a Dominant should see to it that a submissive regularly takes their medication, a submissive should be making sure the Dominant takes theirs. It can actually be the submissives task to give the Dominant the medication on schedule. Just like a Dominant should monitor the behavior of a submissive for any changes in mental health, so should a submissive monitor the Dominant. Why? Because even when seeing a professional and regularly taking medication, mood swings, anxiety and any other issues CAN still happen for a variety of reason, especially if the medication one is taking stops working. And meds DO stop working after a period of time. The body builds a tolerance to the meds and a new medication must be sought. Why is this important? Because when meds stop working and issues are allowed to rise, bad things can happen. A mood swing could hit during a scene and change the way the person thinks, alter their abilities, and adherence to agreements. Now I am not just blowing smoke here. I developed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME almost 30 years ago and with it came the anxieties and depression resulting with trying to deal with life being disabled. I’ve seen psychiatrists, therapists and more physicians than I care to remember. I’ve take almost a dozen different antidepressants and a few anxiety meds. Even though I have been deemed “stable”, I still stay aware of my moods and mental health, and ask to change meds when I feel a drop in effectiveness. I do this not only for my own wellbeing, but I did it for my family and for my submissive. May, being Mental Health Month, we should all take the time to care for our own mental health, if you have any issues. It has as much to do with being safe in a dynamic as any physical issue. © 5/2/23 Ronald Dirienzo

So physical trauma can cause mental trauma. Psychiatric medications can have physical side effects.
