Although not a necessity in a BDSM dynamic or play. Gear, in all its various forms, usually is a mainstay of dynamics and especially play.
Whether it’s a beginners set of Velcro cuffs and blindfolds or locking leather cuffs and leather hood, or a St. Andrews cross and spanking bench, gear takes a dynamic from a simple Dominant/submissive protocol dynamic into the various kinks and fetishes that can heighten the pleasures of a BDSM dynamic.
And gear is not often cheap, even when the online shops have sales, quality gear will cost a pretty good amount. Some are fortunate enough to be able to make quality gear themselves, or at least produce something makeshift to enhance their play when they can’t afford buying gear.
But no matter what you use, upkeep is essential, unless you want to keep buying or making replacements. That means not only using gear the correct way, but keeping them clean and in good condition.
Leather good should be clean and conditioned with leather cleaners and conditioners.
Vibrators and other toys should be cleaned with commercial toy cleaners or anti bacteria soaps or wipes.
Large furniture should be keep clean, polished and disinfected. Periodic checks on the nuts and bolts that hold the furniture together is also a must for safety reasons.
Rechargeable items should be charged before they run completely down to the lithium batteries don’t wear out as fast. Battery operated gear should have the batteries removed between play so the batteries don’t start corroding inside the toy.
Glass toys should be carefully stored where they won’t get chipped or cracked. If they DO get chipped or cracked they should be discarded to keep them from cutting sensitive areas.
Maintenance of gear can be the duty of either or both of the partners.
Some Dominants take it upon themselves to maintain the gear, others delegate the responsibility to the submissive, while some couples share the task.
To me, taking care of gear, is secondary only to taking care of your partner.
If you want it to last, take good care of it.
