Way back when, long before the internet, BDSM novels and movies, the education of people entering the BDSM Lifestyle was of paramount importance to those already in the Lifestyle. The knowledge was passed on by word of mouth during mentorship and training. What was passed down wasn’t always exactly what had been passed on before, but there was an effort to make sure everyone in the lifestyle was educated. Novices were not seen as fresh meat to take advantage of, but as students that needed to learn the ins and outs to be a respectable member of the Community. Fortunately or unfortunately, that has changed. There are too many that view novices as fair game to take advantage of, lie to, teach things that will make the novice believe the wrong way. The internet gave views that strayed from the path too often because not enough people in the Lifestyle thought it appropriate to use the internet to teach what had always been handed down face to face. Novices heard one thing on the internet and thought it was the truth, whether it was or not. Variations of the Lifestyle cropped up and were preached about in chat rooms and accepted as gospel. Grey areas formed as new terminology was coined by those with little experience in the lifestyle. With the incredible amount of web sites, multi media groups, dating sites and blog sites dedicated to the BDSM Lifestyle it can be difficult to figure out which have it right, which have it wrong or which have some right and some wrong. On top of that, there are the bloggers who set themselves up as experts on all things BDSM and refuse to accept any other iteration of what they say is the only way. Which all leads to TOO MUCH information available to wade through, trying to figure out what is wrong or right, a variation or a trap from a predator, a lie or the truth. Even still, it is up to those of us in the Lifestyle that are honest, trustworthy, respected and have good communication skills to educate those that want to be educated about the Lifestyle. I can tell you it is not always easy. There is always those that disagree or think there is only one way or don’t want the novices to learn anything, want them naïve and open to lies. Those of us that try to educate, are often labeled as groomers, liars ourselves, narcissists, egomaniacs. But only by education within the Lifestyle will the Lifestyle mitigate the dangers of the predators, the black eyes in the media from predators or get any kind of acceptance. At least enough to be left alone with our Lifestyle choices without being persecuted. I doubt we will ever be able to educate those outside the Lifestyle. They will always believe for the most part that were are sinners or maniacs with no regard for each other. But we have to keep those in the Lifestyle and those entering the Lifestyle educated so that Safe, Sane and Consensual… Communication, Honesty, Trust and Respect… Health and Wellbeing, keep us respectable, at least from within, if not outside the Lifestyle. © 1/25/24 Ronald Dirienzo
