Just as I wrote previously about sadist, masochism comes in all different degrees.
It is very important to realize that just because a submissive says they are a masochist, doesn’t mean they can actually stand what any particular sadist can dish out.
There are those that truly can handle pain to a high intensity, those that can handle something in between high and low intensity and those that think they are a masochist because they can handle pain when they are in subspace, but in reality, they scream bloody murder to the slightest pinch or discomfort.
Because of the different degrees of pain that masochists can handle, it is always best to start with low intensity and build until you find your partners limitations, both physical and psychological. If you start with high intensity, chances are it will be a traumatic experience for the submissive and very well could be one and done with you, even with a safeword.
Some masochist WANT pain involved in everything in the dynamic. Others accept pain gratefully when inflicted. But a true masochist, doesn’t have to be “in the mood” to handle pain. That’s like saying they are submissive, but only when in the mood.
Like true submission, masochism is a state of being. It doesn’t come and go based on mood, the time of day, or who you are with. You may evolve away from it, or deeper into it over time, but it is not based on your mood or how aroused you are.
Masochism is not something you can or should try to force yourself or someone else to be. That’s abusive, either to yourself or to another. Whether you are a masochist or you aren’t, accept who you are and don’t try to force yourself to be something you aren’t. You can try to evolve, but remember, evolvement takes time. Rushing it is forcing it and can lead to trauma, ill will toward a partner you weren’t a match for in the first place and possibly a long recovery period before searching again.
Vet properly, ask specific questions about pain and start slow, with safe calls… just in case.

I love pain but I have a low tolerance for it. It's definitely a good idea to vet your playmate and start off slow and build up a tolerance for pain. The search continues!
