We are all seeking a capable partner. Whether we speak to experienced people or a novice. We are looking for someone capable of not only filling their role in the dynamic, but capable of fulfilling our needs in the dynamic and whatever type of relationship is involved in the dynamic. If you can judge the experience of the potential partner, it makes it much easier to decide whether that person can meet your needs and fill their role properly. But, when we have to try and judge the capabilities of a novice, it becomes more of a crap shoot to decide whether that person can fill the role and your needs. Some people are better than others at judging potential capabilities. Some other people prefer a novice so that they can try to mold the novice into a desired ideal. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. The basic fact is that we all have different capabilities and to try to make clones, with the same capabilities and responses, is all but impossible. We should judge each person and their capabilities or potential separately. Of course the risk is always that you will misjudge the capabilities of a potential partner and be disappointed by reality. Even worse is when a person has the capability, but doesn’t use it and so disappoints their partner.
