Many people outside the Lifestyle looking in, think we live in a fantasy world. They don’t know any better. They don’t know of the commitment, they don’t know all of what makes up our reality. That’s OK. They are not part of the lifestyle so they haven’t a clue about everything that goes into it that grounds us in reality. They only see the movies and read the novels that leave out the intricacies of the Lifestyle. What is not OK is the people who say they live the lifestyle, but only indulge their fantasies, then go back to the reality of their vanilla world without thinking about BDSM until they need their next fix of fantasy laden excitement. I’ve written before that being a Dominant or a submissive is who we are. It’s not part of a fantasy they we play a role in. We don’t flick a switch and turn it on and off based on our mood or sex play partner. We live it all the time. Maybe sometimes overtly and sometimes clandestinely, but we don’t stop the mindset. Our protocols, rules, limits, boundaries, kinks and/or fetishes ARE our reality. What we do when we scene play, may be a fantasy we bring to life in a safe sane and consensual way, but our everyday life is a reality within the BDSM Lifestyle. We should always keep reality in mind when planning of fantasy play so as not to try something that is best left to fantasy of the mind, rather the reality of our physical abilities. We can try to educate those outside the Lifestyle to try and gain their acceptance, but most probably still won’t understand the difference. And part of that reason is because of what they have seen on a screen or read in a book, and part of that is what friends tell them about how they “live” the lifestyle a few times a month by acting a role and playing a game in the bedroom, as if they were on a fantasy camp vacation. © 3/10/24 Ronald Dirienzo
