It is natural in life and throughout the universe for things to evolve. Time doesn’t stand still, keeping things the same for eternity.
What that means in the BDSM Lifestyle is that people will evolve. They will change. Not only physically as they age, but emotionally, and mentally. What we like changes over time. Some things we add, some things we subtract due to changes in our lives that come from what we have experienced over time. We learn to like things and we learn or decide to dislike things.
It’s part of life, just like changes in laws, the process to manufacture, where we eat, what we eat, or weather tendencies, and life expectancies.
Not only do we as members of the Lifestyle change, but the Lifestyle itself changes. It has evolved too, due to many different causes. From changing social norms, to changing economic standards. From what authors write in novels, to what new members can fit into their busy schedules.
New terms, new categories and subcategories. Some widely accepted, some detested by longtime members and new members alike.
Some try to keep everything the same as it was decades ago. And there is nothing wrong with that.
Some try to forge a new path, whether more convenient, more simplified, less time consuming for the modern busy life or just to try something that hasn’t been tried before. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
But a few things in the Lifestyle should never change. Safety, communication, honesty, trust, respect, and consent among the most important. Because the Lifestyle wouldn’t work without these basic tenets.
We shouldn’t be afraid or resentful of evolution. It’s natural. As long as the basic tenets of the Lifestyle remain the same, we should allow everyone to evolve and live and play as they please.
