Much of what I write about imperative should be common sense, or at least well known by all in the BDSM Community. But for those novices or those that don’t know or realize it: The 4 pillars are imperative to BDSM. Communication, Honesty, Trust and Respect. Without them everything falls apart or is fake. Consent is imperative. Without consent, what we do is just abusive. Even WITH consent, the law feels what we do is abusive. So get and give consent carefully. Safety is imperative. Without safety as a top priority, you may as well have a death wish or be uncaring about yourself or the partners you play with. Patience is imperative. Rushing into things ignores safety and is asking for trouble. Self-awareness and self-control are imperatives. If you don’t know about yourself and can’t control yourself, you have no business in this Lifestyle. These are just off the top of my head. There are many more. For many, limits are imperative, Safewords are imperative, honor, ethics and morals can be imperatives. Most of us will have other imperatives others may not. Without these imperatives, we have no Lifestyle, we would have a string of abusive encounters If someone informs you of an imperative, respect it. Don’t try to manipulate them or coerce them out of what they feel is imperative to them. There’s a reason they feel that way. If you can’t handle or abide by that imperative, walk away. If someone doesn’t abide by the imperatives I’ve listed, RUN AWAY. You will be thankful you did. © 4/11/24 Ronald Dirienzo
