We are not a democracy, we are a republic. Our union has 50 participants who ALL get a say. That, is what the electoral college is about. The good people in the state of Wyoming who are outnumbered by the cows living there, have different issues than those in California and New York. If we did a popular vote, why should they stay in a union that they have no say in An ACTUAL POPULAR vote happens on the State level... but this is NOT how our voting system works on the Federal level. The house is for the rable (Hamiltons words). They are elected by the rable (you and me he meant) and represent the rable's interests. Equal rable means equal representation (well after the 14th amendment anyway). They START all appropriations bills. The senate was appointed by the states for THE STATES' interest in appropriations bills. Here all states are equal no matter their population. So, both your theories have already been shot down. Big states still have more electors than small states. Sorry, the data is not on your side. The math may be in certain circumstances, but not your reasons. See below for what really happened. The President, the leader of the administrative branch, created to spend the money congress (house and senate) told it too (no more AND no less money!) was elected by the land holding male gentry both slave and non-slave holding. Today, they would be called elites. The president could ultimately be the check on congress spending money in what the elites thought was the wrong place. The electoral college was devised to limit the representation from slave holding states u.til the 14th amendment but mainly to fight corruption in said electiorial prcoess. The problem we have now is the winner-take-all system (created in 1824). This takes your vote and gives it to the winner NO MATTER WHO YOU VOTED FOR. If candidate A wins 50% plus 1 of the popular vote in your district or county (depends on the state), you ended up voting for candidate A even though you voted for candidate B. What a fucked up system. No matter what you might think or you've been told, the 2020 vote in the US was the most secure and accurate vote ever..... EVER! That was not due to the electoral college but to the dedication of county and state employees and the pride they have in their jobs to get it correct no matter the outcome and their personal political views. Not the electoral college. Commend you election officials and keep political hacks out of those positions! The electoral college is only on the periphery a vestigate of slavery. But is stated purpose isn't an issue anymore. It has out-lived its usefulness. It must be abolished. I say that not because I use data to establish my positions on political things ... oh wait, it's exactly because I use data to establish my position on political (and all other) things. So, nice theories guys, but no. Your theories do not even comport to what the founding fathers said the purpose was. I'll admit that this took a bit more than 5 seconds of research, but it is an important topic and should be explored and explained properly. The summary? The electoral college has out-lived its stated purpose of reduction of corruption in electing the president (it had other purposes that were more nefarious, but we should defer to it stated purpose by the founding fathers). It should be abolished.
