 Jesus wasn't homeless. Besides, according to an interpretation accepted by the pope, Mary and Joseph did find an inn to spend the night, but she couldn't very well give birth in a crowded common room, so they went to the barn to have some privacy.

In any case, just a tale on a unreliable book with a lot copied from previous legends.
