I took Basic and AIT (advanced infantry training) at Fort Polk in Louisiana when I was a young lad, and-- wouldn't you know it--my first MOS (military occupational standard/service)--my first army job-- was as an indirect fire crewman--that is, as a mortar man. It scared the shit out of me, for the most part, especially the misfires, so as soon as I could, I got my MOS changed and became a driver, which included trucks--deuce and a halfs, ton and a quarters--and jeeps, etc.-- and which was a hell of a lot more comforting, civilized, and safe. I was in a National Guard unit that was heading back to New York after these months of training were finished. The rest of the guys we trained with were either drafted or had enlisted in the regular army...and whose next stop on their "itinerary" was almost certain to be Vietnam, where the brutal and savage war was in full swing. I account myself lucky to have avoided 'Nam, though I remain ever grateful to those who went over there to courageously face the madness, head on...many of whom, sadly, never returned. One of my brothers did go over there (with the 173rd Airborne) and thankfully, did return, after his tour of duty was up. His MOS, by the way, was as a radio operator. It's hard to believe that it has been almost 50 years since that war ended, Sara. It's even harder to believe that I was born only two years after World War II ended. OMG! I guess I'm just an ancient senior citizen, now... LOL
