The Glory of a Great Play Partner

I have whined and kvetched for ages but today want to tip my hat and give kudos to a truly great play partner. We agreed on a fairly long and complex story arc and have worked with one another to be sure the narrative unfolds as we want it to. The end is predictable - she, the ingenue, will concede to what is demanded of her - but how we get there - slowly, incrementally, over time - is what makes this so much fun. I can't wait for the next chapter.

Many scenes are reliably predictable; and that's okay. This one is not. We have already witnessed that both of us can (and do) lose the thread of the narrative and respond to a situation in ways the reflect us more than our characters. This requires a certain freedom and flexibility of thought and action which, I think, we both have; my partner certainly does.

(Note: We were able to bring this tangent back to the original narrative and that, too, was fun .)

In any event, this journey continues, and I look forward to more unanticipated twists and turns.

This "scene" is now 3+ weeks old. It is building slowly and inevitably to its conclusion but that is still some time away. This has been fascinating as my partner and I have really had to get to know and understand our characters in a way that makes the progression of the narrative at all plausible (understanding the need for willing suspension of disbelief). In any event, we are about to write the next chapter and I can't wait.

The scene I have been referring to is now a month old and I and my partner think we can keep it going for a bit longer as there are certain narrative uncertainties that have to be resolved. I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoy this. (This is a blackmail story.)

And, amazingly, I have another scene that in terms of the narrative is 4 days old. Here, too, there is enough uncertainty about what will happen that it can certainly go on a bit longer - well, one more day, at least. (This is a capture story.)

I know this is not for everyone, but slow and steady is my favorite and I feel fortunate to now have 2 great, creative, imaginative, and active partners.

The long scene - a blackmail scene - ended in November, 2023. It was fabulous; well, I thought so. There were times when it kind of stumbled but for the most part it moved fairly smoothly. My partner and I had an idea for the narrative arc and basically accomplished it as imagined.
This took a commitment of time and energy - agreeing to meet once a week at a specific time in a specific room - and really concentrating on staying true to our characters and advancing the plot. I think we did this more often than not.
Is there a point to this? Only that a scene - especially a complex one - is like any other relationship and requires good communication, trust, patience, and effort.
