My Personal Battle With Body Dysmorphia

I never realized until I was taking nude photos of myself today that I suffered from what science calls "Body Dysmorphia".

I've heard the term countless times but I just never knew what it was, only mine has bugged me for as long as I can remember. I even get it when I am fully clothed and watching myself on camera.

Being disabled since birth with cerebral palsy from the waist down, when I am walking I have it implanted in my head that I am walking like the person next to me, but when I see myself on camera it's like I don't even recognize myself anymore.

There's another fellow in the building who is also living with cerebral palsy from the waist down and partially in his upper body. When we greet each other at the mailroom I don't even notice his disability. It's truly a weird feeling. Some say it even leads to social anxiety.

It is unknown who coined the phrase "We are each our own worst critic". Indeed.

Perhaps just dealing with the problem head on is the best solution. Time will tell.

At any rate, I'm taking the first step, I posted an image in a private album for friends to look at. The time for healing is now.

I guess it rather explains my subconscious effort from the age of 16 why I felt more at ease behind the microphone of a medium-sized market radio station or working behind the scenes of a local cable access network when I was in broadcast college.

I just never connected the dots.

I can certainly relate to this, which brings to mind that I noticed today when I tried filming myself with my iPhone in the shower that my legs spasmed as I was standing under the shower head. I only realized it until after the fact when I played back the video while trying to edit it. I ended up deleting the whole video because I didn't want that posted on a site as large as this one.

I didn't want to relive the pain and stigma of my teen years, of being ridiculed and laughed at by grown adults.

That's true about camera latency on phones, I never thought about that. It's amazing how much difference even 100ms makes. Even in the age of the internet world and high speed connections, 100ms seems like an eternity.

And you're right about being thrown off while DJing on the radio, the latency difference between what is heard on the studio speakers and the over-the-air monitor is also registered in the milliseconds.

My gait is affected as well, especially in my right foot. My right shoe gets worn down quicker than my left shoe. I try to buy shoes with hard thick soles so they'll last longer, otherwise I go through a pair of shoes about as often as tires need to be rotated on the automobile.

When one discusses one's problems
One finds out they are not alone

So very true. It feels better getting it out there.
