Burning Man … crazy weekend luck I’m not at BRC

You may not know this about me, I am considered a burner. Burner is the term commonly used for participants who attend (or have) attended the burning man festival. While many view me as kind, generous, funny and a real vanilla square in the business and social circles that surround me my edge has been curiosity. The idea of vivre et laisser vivre is my motto when it comes to what people do in their own lives. Don't criticize or legislate others, as long as they are not impacting your life. Enjoy life to its fullest.

Over the last many years, Burning Man has gotten out of control. My last visit to BRC (Black Rock City) was in 2011, and the first time was in 2005. Just thinking (and doing the math) wow time just flies since that was over 18 years ago. The first time I heard about the Burning man, was in 1991 (the year I got sober). Visiting my brother in the bay, I read a newspaper article (in San Francisco) about the park police shutting down a group who had been burning a man, yes when really reading the article it was a wooden image of a man. It seems these guys after one had a bad breakup several years earlier decided to go down to Baker Beach in SF and just clean their soul by burning the structure. Wow, so cool. The memory flooded my mind. Clearly the memory was there from a few years prior and I swam in the feeling of burning my exes picture (Debby Mc) in a my Malibu fireplace. How cathartic and cleansing that was for me. So, Burning Man every so often would pop up in article and I would get fascinated. Reading about their move to the desert and the free style artistic people who followed.

Not having the resources or time (recession/work/grad school/raising my ) I was left to only thinking about the trek to the desert to experience the group. in 2005, I was lucky enough to have my mom / and grandmother schedule a European vacation and was going to take my . Although we share a house (ownership) we were not a couple by this time. I decided to try and attend Burning Man. Tickets were easy to get. Lucky first burn as many told me. The weather was not crazy hot, dust storms were to a minimum (lucky since I only had my glasses and no goggles). I packed up the older 1998 Volvo XCV70 (AWD drive) station wagon with comfortable clothes, my camping gear, two coolers (for food to be easily prepared) and many (I took 10) gallons of water for drinking, light washing and cooking if needed for my 4 nights.

2011 was my second trip, that Burning Man was crazier. Luck was upon me when getting my tickets early. A friend mentioned she wanted to go, so to be prepared it was important to at least have our tickets in my hand. Later it was announced that the tickets were sold out, during the sale. The silicon valley, hollywood and europe seems to have started this current phase of glamping. That is to have your motor homes brought in by hired help, caterers with fully stocked kitchens and then come back and pick them up after you are done. Yes a cottage industry sprung up at Burning Man. Now they have a charter company that flies in planes from a few selected airport.

I considered going in 2020 after my shocking breakup with Ana (the Planned Parenthood problem solving Phd) yet the pandemic put a stake through that plan. This year, 2023, again it was considered by me to attend. While my age @ 66 it it just a number, it caused me to think long and hard about attending. It seems many are second guessing. The attendance, while in the tens of thousands, many tickets remained available up to a few weeks ago (the last time I checked). Maybe since Covid has ramped up recently, the craziness and randomness of the art displays or just the economy or maybe even Burning Man fatigue. One thing to note, even with the hard partying nature of burning man and BRC, there is a sober community or two for me to find solace and to chill away from the booze and drugs.
