What is Tantra and Tantric Sex?

Yes, you can believe that my curiosity about tantra / tantric sex has expanded. Let me share a few things that my going down the rabbit hole has spotlighted for me.

1. What is Tantra

Tantra, explained in a few articles is an ancient Indian practice that dates back more than 5,000 years. In Sanskrit, the word tantra means woven together. In the Buddhist and Hindu practice, meditation is important and helps the practitioner find their path. Those who mediate may also practice tantric sex as a way to connect or “weave” their physical being with the spiritual they are striving for. Wow. It seems that the practice of Tantra / Tantric Sex brings together the spiritual and sexual together and the practice emphasizes the importance of having intimacy during a sexual experience. This sexual experience can be with a partner or even alone.

My curiosity, and thank goodness my mind does stay open about most things. My imaging the possibility of connecting with another person (or even just by myself) on such a higher plane first off guided me with the encouraging ideals and literally drove me me digging for more information. Yes, as Tantra (Tantric Sex) is such a common word seen in many profiles the term Tantra in fact has been discussed by some here with reverence. Yet seemingly, by most it is just bandied about here on these erotic / sex sites. Through my reading / discovery, Tantra/ Tantric sex is so much deeper than that.

2. Is Tantra about sexual pleasure?

Yes and No, it seems. While that sounds like a trick question, again there is depth. Tantra is not only about sexual pleasure. Tantra is designed to assist you in celebrating your own body and finding that place so you can feel heightened sensuality. The Tantra practice mixes spirituality, sexuality, along with a state of mindfulness. The Tantra practice of meditation encourages a sensual experience that can be experienced either alone or with your partner. The goal of tantric sex is to find a connection both in the spiritual realm and physically get that energetic spark physically during a sensual experience. The practice of tantra, based on my reading is slow, easy and steady. While the aim is not always to achieve orgasm, it is about building a connection / energy with your partner (or with yourself). An energetic connection that can be both intense and enlightened. The tantra practice incorporates breathing, sounds, and movements to activate the sexual energy. So it is yes...and no regarding sexual pleasure. It seems the pleasure for yourself is a by-product of the practice. How exciting.

3. How do I learn about tantra?

Oh my gosh, this opened up a whole hornets nest. The first thing that happened when the search engines started spitting out results. There is an old saying to not have any contempt prior to investigation. This was helpful to remember since my initial belief was that it was very...okay crucially important to to be in a relationship with a committed partner to learn tantra. Luckily my mind did not close the search down before the search help me identify and locate some great resources for learning about the ancient practice of tantra practice. This information came and seemed to be broken down into two sections; Workshops and Lectures. My focus is on finding out more about this ancient practice, so for me, workshops seemed the right thing to start with.

Workshops: Based on research these tantra workshops generally take place over multiple days (as few as a weekend and as many as ten days). While they could be considered more of a sexual retreat, yet based on feedback, they are not. They can be intense and draining. Many highly rated workshops include theory in addition to practical tantra exercises and tantric meditations. These workshops are also referred to also as Tantra intensives. Here are a few;

Esalen Institute, Big Sur

Intimacy Retreats, Various locations around

Laura Carrotti’s, New York (6 days)

Ashley Encantada, Various locations

WESTERN SPIRIT RETREAT, Sedona, Az

TantraNova, Chicago

Tantra Institute, Chicago ...they also have tantra speed dating around the country

Temple of Bliss, a few locations in LA ....

Holy Love Institute

This research has helped me move from just thinking about the practice of tantra to actually moving forward, albeit slowly and steadily toward learning more about how the sacred practice of tantra will help me connect first off with myself and my future partners.
