Liner Notes 1. There is that great scene in The Hunt For Red October where Ramius (Connery) has stolen the breakthrough ballistic missile submarine. But the caterpiller silent drive has been sabotaged, and they continue on, through “Red Route One” - a very tight series of underwater canyons that no sub could navigate without detail charts and distances -- something only the Soviets have. But ... Ramius’ own countrymen have found him, and they drop a plane launched torpedo to destroy him. And Connery deals with it all: imminent death, an escape, a mini-mutiny, the beam of his boat, shut up, the time to the turn, give me the count, you're relieved, sound collision and ... they escape! The torpedo loses the huge sub in a rock formation, and explodes behind them. And the crew, shocked at being shot at by their own countrymen, realized they could have been killed, and they look around the bridge in awe ... at their Lord and Master ... the great Captain Connery -- er, Ramius. Forgive me. One of the best action sequences shot on film. And that adoration and awe ... no one could evoke that, and hold it, like Sean Connery. 2. And then there he is in Jamaica, on the beach, between takes, playing with Ursula Andress. There is a whole sequence of these, where he is teaching her to do a handstand. Look at her face, she’s fascinated - Ursula Andress. Imagine the number of men who had hit on her ... and there she is ... stripped of self-consciousness, by this Scotish Lion. 3. Ladies luved him, guys wanted to be him - and definitely talk like him. 4. That’s Michelle Pfieffer in The Russia House. (Look how he’s holding her, and how safe she feels.) 5. I’ll leave it for (the female) student to search for him as Mr. Universe -- yes, he won -- and post a picture of him from that pre-movies era. There’s one that is amazing -- no steroids, just work and diet. 6. The entire genre of indestructable, physically superior, intellectually superior super secret agent was started by Mr. Bond, and no one set the boundaries for that more than Mr. Connery in Dr. No. 7. And then, impossibly, the fearful, bookish, jazz musician everyman in The Russia House. A completely under appreciated actor. 8. ... this is no time to be rescued. tgd
