Sales people are a strange bunch - the best ones are evangelical about their product, whatever that product is.

Being evangelical of course does not excuse being completely unknowing and misleading folk as a result.

I enjoyed your telling of this story very much.

I look at the photo, assuming it was created by the manufacturer and the decorative hub cap tips me off on what side to attach the tire. Does this match what the printing on the tire?

Did you check the speed, temp and estimated millage rating when you bought on line for comparison? I have learned that the same tire, can have different ratings on the slips that are glued to the tire.

I was once shopping for some Michelin tires; same model number on the sidewall, but the stickers from three different stores had three different ratings? One form a large well known place and the price was the highest, but had the highest rated tires. Second place had slightly lower rated tire and was as I recall about $14/tier cheaper. The third place had the lowest price but teh speed, temp and estimated life were all much lower. Life expectancy was nearly half that of the first place.

Oh, and I agree lots of sales people are rigid and the companies that they work for like it that way.

Maybe it's really good in reverse? That way it could be asymmetrical and omni... No that would be bi-directional huh? I guess in a world of basically binary options we have two choices

I see your sales point, but this guy (in theory) was a technical support person, where data should trump marketing. Glad you liked the read.

Yes, the photo shows the intended design alignment.

But (not to beat a dead horse - or a flat tire - but ... ) whatever my reasons for asking the question (not trusting the cue of the picture), the stupid thing that struck me is that the tire has a label saying what side goes on the OUTSIDE, and the technical guy did not even know this.

Exactly.

bi-directional is much closer to what it is than "omni", if that, because, yunno, on the sidewall is printed ... oh, nevermind.
