That's right peanut gallery .... We're headed to the dentist this afternoon at 1400 hours MDT for a root canal and a temporary crown. Does that make anyone's pucker cord pucker a little?

I had my first ever root canal about five years ago. Prior to that, I'd only heard other people talk about having them, and the way everyone ... and I do mean everyone ... talked about it, I thought it was going to be akin to being skinned alive or something. Pain, pain and more pain! After it was over, I was like "That's it??????" To me, it was nothing more than having a cavity. I've had a couple more since then and it's the same - No biggie.

I asked the dental assistant why I had heard nothing but horror stories from others about root canals and she indicated that a lot of people wait too long to have a needed one done and it can become very involved and cause problems. I guess that made sense. My teeth that were done never hurt on the front end and the need for a root canal was found via x-rays. Today's tooth feels perfectly normal.

In any event, in I go this afternoon. A few trips ago, I took the front office staff, my hygienist and the dental assistant a piece of my world class cheesecake. They are now addicted and with every trip I take them cheesecake. I tease them that no wonder it's determined I need dental work - They simply want more cheesecake! A thought did occur to me though .... I've never taken the dentist that will be doing my root canal a piece. Probably not good strategy to take everyone a piece but him, is it? Today, he will become addicted too.

Choosing the right endodontist is important. Mine is beautiful. After a half dozen root canals I don't love them, but I really look forward to an hour staring at her eyes.

That sounds like my hygienist ... She is a stone cold fox and has an incredible personality. She also gets two pieces of cheesecake each visit ... I take the cheesecake in covered containers, so it's her and my little secret.

She also does the novacaine injections and has the touch of an angel - You don't feel a thing.

Yeah, I've had plenty of root canals...it just takes a while for them to get it done. I usually get a prescription for painkillers & antibiotics afterward...spend the rest of the day on the couch, just vegging out.

Yep .... Seems just like getting a cavity getting taken care of, only longer.

They give me prescriptions for pain & antibiotics, but I generally only take the latter. Perhaps I'm one of the fortunate ones, but I don't experience much, if any, residual pain.

Nothing as painful as a dentist visit !

Given I hate shots, getting the shot of novocaine is always my worst fear. As mentioned though, my beautiful hygienist does it and I never cease to be amazed at how pain free it is. If I didn't know she was doing it, I wouldn't know it was being done.

She's good at it for sure. No wonder she gets two pieces of cheesecake!

More power to you.

I had a root canal about ten days after major surgery. Knocked the hell out of me. Lost 15 pounds after having just lost 17 from the surgery. Endodontist said it was one of the most difficult root canals he had ever done. He says the one he's going to do on me Friday may be even more difficult. Narrow, bent root apparently. I expect to be on a Lagavulin diet for a while.

Shazam ... Sorry to hear about that experience with your root canal. Hopefully the one this Friday will go smoothly with no residual side effects.

Mine went well yesterday ... After it was all said and done, I teasingly said to the assistant ... "That's it??" Barely any residual pain today at all -and only when I bite down.

Like you I've had a couple of root-canals & haven't had any problems
with them.
But if my Dentist gets a chisel out like that - I'm off.

I've had three of my wisdom teeth out, the last one, lower right is laying
on it's side. My dentist said, "if that one plays up, you'll be going to hospital.
There's a facial nerve right next to where it's laying. If they damage that you
could end up with a numb face for life. Like you've had Novocain."
Great. So I'm just hoping I don't get any problem with it.

Plzrmeister replies on 10/6/2021 5:09 am:
All four of my wisdom teeth are in the history books.
One of mine was laying on its side too, as you describe. When it was extracted, the dentist never mentioned any facial nerves nearby..

It did take a while for the area to heal and I was in pain for about a week afterwards. At the end of that week, a small piece of jaw bone worked its way to the surface - I could feel it with my tongue. I used a highly sophisticated dental tool, otherwise known as a toothpick, to remove it and then the spot healed quickly and the pain went away. I suppose that's the one dentist horror story of my life.
