It was a sleepy and peaceful Sunday morning on December 7th, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. Just before 8 A.M., hundreds of Japanese planes descended on the base. For the next hour and fifteen minutes, it was hell on Earth for both military and civilians in the area.

The Japanese managed to destroy or damage nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes. More than 2,400 Americans died in the attack, including civilians, and another 1,000 people were wounded.

Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who planned the attack on Pearl Harbor would reportedly write in his diary, “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”

He was right. The United States declared war on Japan the next day. Over the course of the next three plus years, the Pacific theatre saw some of the bloodiest fighting of World War II.

After countless loss of life by American men and women, Fapan was defeated. Formal surrender documents were signed aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945.

As President Franklin Delano Roosevelt stated in his address to congress, December 7th, 1941 is a date that will live in infamy. The date is firmly etched in my mind, and I will never forget the men and women who died at Pearl, nor the bravery displayed that infamous day.

Please take a moment to reflect. Let us never forget those who perished.

I will never forget. I belong to the Ladies Aux of our local VFW and our WWII veterans are few and far between. Many had been friends over the years and were truly the Greatest Generation.

Good for you Denise! You're right, World War II veterans are few and far between and soon there won't be any left. What will live on forever though, is their legacy.

I see where there is a 101 year old survivor of Pearl Harbor who will be there today for the memorial celebration. I know many who survived that day have their ashes interned on the USS Arizona when they pass. They want to be with their brothers.

I just watched a news segment where a historian said that the US only wanted to retaliate against Japan and still wanted no part of the European conflict.

He emphasized that if Germany and Italy had not declared war on the US three days after Pearl Harbor, the world would have been a very different place. Scary.

I remember my dad had a saying ... "If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, what a Christmas we'd have." I suppose that's appropriate right now since Christmas isn't far off. I know you've heard the saying about opinions being like assholes - Right? You heard one historian's opinion. I'd wager other historians might have completely different takes on the subject. The premise could be debated and argued into perpetuity.

For the sake of argument, Let's say he was right.
Either the world would be a different place, or we'd have joined the fight against the Axis alliance sooner or later anyways. The three principal partners in the Axis alliance were Germany, Italy, and Japan. These three countries recognized German domination over most of continental Europe; Italian domination over the Mediterranean Sea; and Japanese domination over East Asia and the Pacific. Back to those 'ifs' and 'buts' .... Pesky little buggers aren't they? Oh well, it gives historians something to ponder and debate.

When the giant was awakened, men and women went to recruiting stations in droves and signed up. We were a country at total war and we were pissed!!!!!

Good for your adopted father! Mine served in the Army wiith the 45th Infantry Division. He saw a lot of combat, was wounded several times and also decorated for bravery many times.

I couldn't have said it better myself!

Me either. Always keep the men and women in our Armed Services in your prayers. They're willing to die for you.

Thanks pac .... I hope the date and events will always be taught to our youth and we will forever honor those who fell.

You don't fuck with a sleeping giant. Right now we seem stuck on fighting amongst ourselves. But let some other country or group of people attack us and you just busted open a hornet's nest.

"Franklin Delano Roosevelt stated in his address to congress, December 7th, 1941 is a date that will live in infamy." In grade school this is one date I have never forgotten and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's were etched in my mind immediately as long as I remember.

December 7, 1941 and June 6, 1944 are dates I do not forget. My dad was a Marine, a WWII and Korean War veteran, and he handed down a lot to me.

Plzrmeister replies on 12/8/2021 5:30 am:
Yes, December 7th and June 6th are days that have special meaning for me too. So many young lives lost those days and we must never forget, nor neglect to teach our children their significance.

The Marines stormed beach after beach after beach as we island hopped across the Pacific to defeat Japan. For all practical purposes, the Japanese fought to the last man, rather than surrender. Our Marines went through hell.
