My New Buddy....

The weather we've been having here in Boise is what is commonly referred to as BALL FROSTING COLD. I listened to the weather report on the news the other night and this January is the third coldest on record ...... Brrrrrr! We've also had snow on the ground since Christmas night and many of the roads have been covered with ice since then. I know, I know .... "You think that's bad, you ought to live where I do!"
This is very atypical for Boise .... So bear with Me on this one.

I am an animal lover and have been 'feeling' for the animals that have had to live with this. I keep the bird feeders full and the wild birds have been going through the seed like there's no tomorrow. Unfortunately for some of them, that's probably true.

On Monday as I pulled onto a customer's car lot, I saw a feral scraggly looking cat scrounging around in front of one of the utility sheds (On cinder blocks) out back. My immediate thought from looking at him/her was that "I bet it's starving and dehydrated" - Since it hasn't been above freezing here for a long time. My soft heart immediately went into action mode.

I walked the car lot and determined the cars I needed to work on and pulled one around to My van, which was not far from where I had seen the cat. I looked over and saw it hunkered down on the top step of the stairs being warmed (as possible) by the sun. I then drove to a nearby convenience store and bought a sack of cat food, a bottle of water and a cup I planned to cut down to size to make a water bowl.

By the time I got back, the sun beating down on the asphalt (Maybe 2 P.M.) had melted enough ice so that the cat was able to lick from a small pool of melted ice. I thought "OK, it does get some water every day at least". I approached the cat with the bag of food and, naturally, it scurried under the shed. I left a pile of food close to where it had gone under and went back to begin working on the car. Maybe 1/2 hour later, I looked over and the food was gone and the cat was again hunkered down in the sun on the top step. I took back the bag of food and left another pile where it had 'escaped' and another pile on the top step. Again, a bit later both piles were gone and the cat was again 'sunning'. Another trip with the bag and two more piles. Again they were gone. I thought, "Jesus, if this cat keeps eating, it's going to explode!"

This time, I was ready to leave so I left a 'large' pile of food just under the shed where it would be protected from snow or marauding crows and magpies. I knew this amount of food would keep the cat fed overnight until I could check back in the morning. I drove back by yesterday morning to check it's 'stash' and it was about 1/2 gone. I restocked the supply and plan to check again this morning to see how things are going. Guess I have a new morning routine from now on.

I lived with My paternal grandmother for a while when I was in high school and I remember she had a feral cat that came around like clockwork each afternoon for a bowl of milk and a bowl of food. Grandma would fix it up and I'd take it out to where the cat 'hid' under the bushes. I remember the cat's eyes as it watched Me approach and place the meal on the ground. It was equal parts 'leery' mixed with "Here's my chow!" Perhaps this is where I got My education on helping out helpless animals. I find comfort in knowing Grandma is up there smiling down on Me and My new Buddy.

Thanks minx! I stopped by this afternoon and all the food from yesterday was gone, so I left another large pile for it to eat. That is going to be the fattest feral cat in Boise soon. G

Its kind of bad because there are a lot of animals around..

However I sit here reading this having a bad day thinking i wonder if he would just pick me up for a cuddle. I feel like a bit of a stray cat myself tonight.

Well let's hope it works in the karma department! Made another stop yesterday and placed more food in a pie tin I'd found.

The poor animals can't stand on a street corner with a sign letting people know they're hungry, cold and scared. It breaks My heart to see them. G
