maybe it's just me

I am watching the Peter Jackson film “Mortal Engines” in which the main protagonist is played by Hugo Weaving, who’s most memorable role (in my opinion) is Agent Smith in “the Matrix”.

He has unique facial features, be sure, but it was really the way he spoke, and the blank, stoic look he held on his face throughout pretty much the entire film that stood out. During a scene where he is interrogating Keanu Reeves’ character he just has this cold, mechanical, menacing and creepy way of saying the characters name, over and over again; “Mr. Anderson”. Well, in “Mortal Engines” his character is sporting a beard, mustache and head of hair, plus the costuming is worlds away from the Agent Smith suit he wears in “the Matrix” but the voice, intonation and facial expressions are pretty much the same. In essence, it’s like watching Agent Smith try and act in a different role, but failing miserably. I swear that after most of his lines I keep expecting to hear him end with, “Mr. Anderson”. Is the Agent Smith character, and the way he was portrayed by Weaving that iconic, or have I just not seen him in enough “other” films yet? Is that bad acting on his part, or is it just me, because I can’t think of another instance of this, except maybe Robert Englund and his Freddy Krueger character. No matter what I saw him in after the “Nightmare on Elm Street” series I kept expecting to that fedora hat and striped sweater to appear…
