the cat purrer-er

Or maybe it would just be the cat purrer, since technically neither one of them are words. I just wanted it sound like whisperer, but the word “whisperer” has 3 / syllables while “purrer” only has 2 / two. So I’m divided on whether refer myself as the cat purrer or purrerer. Either way, it’s silly.

We have a new guest with us who is going be quite a challenge. His name is Rebel and he is another feral that has grown around other cats, but not people. That’s something I’ve been pretty darn good at overcoming so far, but this little guy has the added negative of being saddled with a neurological disorder as well. So, even after I work my cat purrerer magic we’ll still have keep our fingers crossed that there is a selfless person out there who wants adopt him give him a better life. In other words, depending how bad his condition is, Rebel may be moving in with us permanently.

As with nearly the other cats, he spent his first couple of days with us holed up in my closet, top of some boxes in the back corner, but it was easy to know when he was moving around because he simply cannot be stealth about it. His back legs in particular are difficult for him to control. When he is on a carpeted surface he does fairly well but on hard surfaces, in places like the kitchen or bathroom, he sounds like a tiny herd of elephants thumping along. I’ve witnessed two seizures that lasted a short period of time, so there is concern there for just how bad off he is. It might take a while to get him to the veterinarian but when he goes they’ll do blood work and a bunch of other stuff to try and determine what his future looks like. Meanwhile, it is my job to get him used to people, trusting people, and eventually get my hands on him to give him some much-needed and deserved loving. Once we reach that goal every day for him will just get better and better.

Right now, you can tell Rebel wants so badly to and be a part of the clan, but it’s also clear he would like be petted and loved by , he’s just not able do that yet. He will lightly rub my leg if I have my back turned, and I’m not paying attention him, and he’ll even lay down in front of and expose his belly as if he wants rub it, but if I make a small move in his direction he puts his guard, and the rare occasion I do manage get a caress in he reacts as if I had just pinched him. He doesn’t run and hide, he just jumps away a little bit. It will take longer than usual tame this little guy but I know it can be done. He wants it, I want it, and I am the cat purrerer so we shall both get a happy ending this chapter of this story at least.

Pardon the lack of pictures. He’s been with us about 4 / four days, but not until today did he begin coming out in the open during the daytime, when I could potentially get better photos. I’ll have to start taking my phone with me though, because now when I go into the kitchen to cook or do dishes, Rebel invariably shows his face. As I cook or clean he will sort of do laps close by, getting just a bit nearer to me with each passing until he is eventually rubbing against as stumps and thumps by. So far I’m finding it best ignore him, for the most part, and he seems most comfortable with that. He gets mucho verbal encouragement and praise but physically speaking I am just a presence moving about, near and above him, and I am letting him approach me at his own pace. It might be slower than I am used , but those times when his body finally connects with my leg are worth the wait.

Nice work saving the cats.
