"Close Encounters of a Latin Lover"

or, “How to be a Third Kind”

Since I just wrote about being a movie lover, and an obsessive DVD collector, I thought I’d jump right in and give you a taste of what’s to come. It won’t always be this way, this is just how I chose to do this one.

During the night, when I am having my first 2 / two meals (I wake up at 10pm and go to sleep the next day at 2pm) it is very quiet outside, so I can put on movies that are serious, dramatic and might require my full attention. Traffic in the street below is sparse, eventually becoming nonexistent, so it is during these times that I will watch horror flicks, dramas, things like that. My last meal of the day usually comes around 9am, and at that time the commotion outside my window has changed considerably, and along with it the volume and intensity. To sit and lose myself in some intense, quiet moment is nearly impossible, so I’ll either put in an action flick, a comedy, or a television series that I’ve seen a zillion times (South Park, Family Guy, It’s Always Sunny…) so I don’t have to worry about missing important dialogue, or getting distracted from essential plot points. The food goes in my mouth and the fodder goes in my eyes and ears, and I end the last meal of the day sated on a couple of levels. Because let’s face it, as much as I like to brag about how amazing my tastes in movies is, I am definitely not above lowbrow, profane, stupid, violent, explosive entertainment. Not everything I watch is smart or destined for an awards ceremony; in fact, some of it is probably reviled by the majority of you. To each their own, I say, and that goes for books and music as well. I may have a strong opinion of what is good and what is garbage, but I’ll never say I’m above enjoying some of that filth every once in a while too. In some cases, maybe even on a regular basis.

With what I’ve just said in mind, you’ll understand why I have 2 / two titles here, and further comprehend why 1 / one of them is a comedy while the other is a more somber affair. Again, every movie-related post won’t be exactly like this, but when you do see an odd duo suck as this one, you’ll have a better idea of why.

“How to be a Latin Lover” was very funny, and I would recommend it to anyone who isn’t afraid of politically incorrect comedy. The main actor, Eugenio Derbez is someone with more charisma than your average comedic actor, and I’m looking forward to seeing what other films of his I might enjoy. Discovering him is like discovering the French actor Dominique Pinon who also has an incredible screen presence, especially due to the fact that his facial features are so unique. Much like Willem Defoe in “the Lighthouse”, I could just watch these gentleman speak, not quite understand what they were saying, but remain mesmerized.

After watching a low budget movie called, “Beyond the Sky”, which was about alien abductions, I had to see “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” because the former was so awful I had to balance out the experience with something I knew wouldn’t leave me feeling like I’d wasted my time. I’m not going to say anything about “Close Encounters…” except that it is as good now as it was all the other times I’ve seen it. A delightful movie indeed.

I don’t like to reveal much of anything about the movies I watch, because I hope people will see them like I did, mostly unaware of what they are about, what the plot twists are, and so on. That being said, I wanted to mention something lame that I noticed about “Beyond the Sky”. The film revolves around a woman who is abducted every 9 years (or something like that) so you’d think a story / movie about her would give her top billing, or at least 2nd / second place, but on the box her name came dead last among the 4 / four stars listed. I swear to you the other male parts weren’t nearly as important or impressive as hers, so it made no sense. It was just such an obvious slap in the face to make a movie about a woman who goes through _______ and then put her male co-stars as top billing. That, and the movie was pretty bad overall.

That’s it. Tune in next time…
