fuck your moral outrage, try a sense of humor sometime

Someone shared an article or news story on that was done by NPR, and it was talking about the effects the pandemic has had on Arab-Americans. Since Black Lives Matter began, race and racism have become a key issue, and now with anti-Asian hate crimes on the rise (or at least suddenly more visible due to continuous and gratuitous coverage) it’s difficult for any news or outlet to ignore glaring disparities related to the subject. I don’t have a problem with anyone for writing how Covid-19 effected Latinos, Arabs, or even the Amish. If you’re going to start talking about one of people may as well include others. So, with no animosity in my heart, but with a bit of sarcasm my fingertips, I added a comment to the thread asking how the pandemic was effecting Polish - Native Americans? Because that’s what I am, and according to even the woke folks you can make fun of yourself. At least I thought that was the rule.

I am genuinely fascinated by the level of anger and vitriol leveled in my direction for my sarcastic comment. It came from people who claim to be so staunchly anti-racist that I guess they felt the need to punish me for my perceived transgression. These folks who seemed to present themselves as good, upstanding citizens fighting for the underdog were quite foul with their reactions and replies. I know I can say things that are sarcastic, possibly even rude, but the response if often off-the-charts disproportionate. The word “racist” comes up very quickly, as does the name calling. You see, it’s terrible to call a Spanish person a name but if you cross someone who is of that mindset, they have every right to verbally demean you to make their point. Fuck that hypocrisy too. There is a violence to these moments that definitely does not originate in my corner, which makes it that much more confounding to me. I say something mildly rude or sarcastic and I get back the equivalent of a punch in the instead of a fair, even-tempered verbal sparring match? This seems to come very heavily from folks that are against racism and the discrimination of trans people. Being passionate is commendable, but being an asshole is not.

One poor guy in the comments section simply wondered aloud why NPR needed to consistently make their reports race related, and he was attacked as well. He wasn’t mocking anyone, wasn’t even arguing a point, just asking a question. The responses were as if he’d gone on a rant instead of just typing a single sentence. He didn’t get a straightforward answer to his direct question, he was lambasted. Once again, it was completely disproportionate and unnecessary. It left me wondering how these people, who are so determined to stand up for the rights of certain people, can be so quick to squash the rights and freedoms of others? If your righteous indignation is a free pass to be rude then what does my freedom of speech give me the right to say or do? Stop looking for things to get upset about. Fuck your moral outrage. Get a sense of humor and cultivate it. Life will go so much easier and smoother for you, and everyone around you if you do.
