oh give me a (naked) home

I thought it might interest a few people to see, in a bit more detail, just what I’m looking at during my search for a new place to live. You might just think I’m sitting on Craigslist hoping to find a room to share or something, but nothing could be further from the truth. I don’t think I’ve ever found a new home that way and I doubt this time will be any different.

I’ve already shared the fact that I sent the few friends, family and loved ones I know a video, asking for their out-of-the-box thinking on this subject, and even shared the gist of a few responses. The hope was that a few ideas from other minds would help me focus my search, and in fact they did, but it hasn’t really amounted to much yet. That means I need to do some thinking for myself. Noooooo!

So here’s the first thing I looked into: nudity colonies, or places I could comfortably (and legally) be naked most of the time. Not only do I feel much more comfortable sans clothing, I figure people who like to be nude are going to gather in warmer climates, which I’m all about. This skinny guy does not like to be cold. Keeping in mind I really want to stay in Oregon, I did a search for nudist colonies, but that led me down a dead end. There were 3 / three prominent places where would could freely, openly be nude all the time but they were resorts, not places to live. Further investigation revealed a few more spots that were nude-friendly, but we’re talking beaches and trails, not cities or towns. I had a sneaking suspicion this would be the case but thought it worth checking out anyways.

Looking for nudist colonies reaffirmed something that I tell a lot of people; public nudity is not illegal in Oregon. The rare exceptions are when you are doing it to incite a reaction, or when it is involved in a professional enterprise. In other words, you can walk down the street naked if you want to deal with the stares and comments, but you better not waggle your naughty bits at anyone to try and upset them, and you better not be filming adult material. Many of you probably aren’t aware that every year Portland not only has a breast cancer awareness march where women walk topless, there is also an evening dedicated to people riding through the streets of the city completely naked. That last one is called “the Naked Bike Ride” of course, and it has gone off without a hitch for as long as I can remember. Society does not collapse and eyes do not burst into flames from the sight of naked flesh.

I didn’t look beyond Oregon, to see if there was maybe a nudist colony a few states over. Maybe they don’t really exist anymore, I don’t know, but I’m keeping my search in Oregon for the moment. If I do get to looking again, California seems like the place to check, especially considering the yearly climate.
