Butt is right. For some, it's the more names he has, the more popular he thinks he is or tells everyone how popular he is. But some also do it to stalk and track.

And sweetie, some women do it too Same motives

I think the biggest issue is that you need to pay to read a profile. Besides that I think ALT solved the friend requests for non paying members.

I think it's just their way to say that they're VERY interested in you. Who wouldn't be?

I think it's bad manners and creates a negative first impression. Asking permission is such a great ice breaker anyway. It's a chance to show that you have read their profile and also show that you can be polite. Women like straight shooters and people of character.

Not strange at all. It is predictable human behavior! The real question is how do you respond! If you trust them, or are interested, friend them. Never, ever accept a friend request from a person until you trust them. You can't control what others do, only what you do. As far as stalkers go, the shredded ones understand human nature.

There is no obligation to accept...or is that considered rude?

A tiny bit rude, but no big deal! This is adult site that mirrors the world we live in! If you haven't stated it in your profile, tell th community you don't accept friend request without communicating first! Just reject the request n move on!
