"He was afraid. He had always been afraid. Forever at the margin of his mind there was something to be afraid of, something to fear. He did not know what it was, but it was always there, real, imminent, unimaginable." (From House Made of Dawn, by N. Scott Momaday)

I am in a slump. I can't thinks of ways to move my stories forward, I can't think of interesting "scenes", and I have less and less energy to visit rooms and make an effort at a connection of any kind. I am sure this well pass - but for the moment - well, there's no resolve here.

Update - I got a couple of bits added to two of my stories. Not the best of my writing but not the not the worst, either. One more to go.

Klezmer Music - My new obsession

I admit to not knowing a lot about the history of and influences on klezmer music. Indeed, I have always and only associated it with music of the Jews in central and eastern Europe. But I have always enjoyed listening to it and am grateful for groups such as the Klezmer Conservatory Band and artists such as Itzhak Perlman for playing and promoting klezmer.

I mention this because the last time I was at the music store where I have my instruments tended to, one of the staff enthusiastically recommended a book of easy klezmer tunes for the violin. I bought it and have been playing the tunes ever since. When I get adventurous, I see if I can play them also on the viola. It is nice to discover something new as we age - and this is a discovery that I am more than a little grateful for.

(4/28/24-- I posted a video of me playing a little klezmer tune. Hope you like it.)

I noticed recently a stunning uptick in the number of views of my blog. At first I thought - cool, people are looking at what I have written - and then the skeptic in me thought/wondered - are these views generated by bots crawling the site?

There is an interesting story in progress at the discussion board at NNFU's Fantasy Writing Room. It would be a fun thought experiment to see how two women or a man and woman would build the story given the same opening line. (Yes, that is an invitation to do so.)

4/19/24 - Story is over.
