......... .......... .......... ....... .. ... .. . ... .. .. .. .. .. ..
Sunday morning. I don't do much traditional blogging here. This week I came across the blog of a friend here in ALT. His was a true blog. For a good stretch of time he described his day, openly charting his feelings about a slave he was looking for, a woman he saw at the diner, the unrelenting need to cut the grass and things like that. After reading about 20 of his entries, it struck me how strong a sense I had of him. And I'm reminded of "Come Together", a song with very simple words but lots and lots behind them:

He roller coaster.
He got ... early warning.
He got ... muddy water.
He want ... mucho filter.
He say ... one and one and one is three ...

So, I suppose, there are many kinds of blogs. Each say their peace, each give some revelation. Some are direct, others ... mucho filter.

There is a collection of movies that, for guys, no matter how many times you've seen it, if you flip to it, you'll stop and watch some. Classic Bogart movies. The Dirty Dozen (except near the end). Lots and lots of WWII moves. Wedding Crashers. Roadhouse. One of mine is "Open Range" with Costner, Duvall and Bening. A western. Costner is simply Charlie. Duvall is Boss. Before the final gunfight, they still don't even know their real names. Mucho filter. So many of the scenes between Costner and Bening are archtypal, the way westerns can be. Duvall's final gunfight scene is that way too. The final scene with Costner and Bening every single woman on the planet should study. I mean that. Every one. Well, every heterosexual woman without a bitter modernistic femmenazi streak.

In another scene, a wonderfully calm one before Costner and Duvall walk across a field into town for a massive gunfight; Bening is standing in a Victorian doorway, set on the front porch, her house surrounded by a white picket fence; and she talks about being in a small town, and having hopes, and time passing. "As you grow old, you forget even what your hopes were hung on to."

Or something like that. Funny, in the IMDb listing, Sue Barlow has next to no lines listed.

Mucho filter. But we all live in small towns. And we all ...

Best to the rest of your weekend.

If you are a Nittany Lions Alumnus, thanks for landing here. If not, feel free to read on anyway. Sandusky has blood on his hands for many reasons, and on many levels. The whole thing is a complete mess. If you would, please read my " Sad Valley {α} " (Nov 8, 2011) post and, if you would and are moved, leave a comment there. (I haven't found a way to use ALT hybrid-HTML to link to a specific blog post, sorry.) Would love to hear from alumni or current students.

Rarely in life do events rise up to the glory of Greek Tragedy, but in this instance, it truly does. You have my sympathies.

... you guys are kinda loud.

What's that you say? You want us louder?

I said, you're louder than most people I sing with.

You want us louder? Ok, fine.

No, not louder. You're LOUD, not louder.

We can always do louder. Wife isn't home. Louder it is.

Not louder, too loud.

Yeah, you never can get too loud. What's next?

Maybe "Come Together"?

I sat just inside the shoreline, a respectable distance from civilization, trying a new thing. Some receive a calling, I made one. And then a faint familiar freshness, and ...

"Would you care for a muffin?"

"Come lay with me." And as was her way, she was in my arms, not using time or space to get there.

"This is new. You called."

"Yes ... I decided to try it this morning, but events happened, sorry I did it without a rejoicing cheerfulness."

"I know, this is you ... but I like the calling. So ... "

"You are always so kind. You must get it from your Mom, though your Dad has been friendly of late."

"He's mellowing."

"Well, this JoePa thing is so much like Him, and your sisters. Thought you might have a thought or two on it ...

"You should probably talk to Sophocles ..."

"Yes ... he came to mind. Of course, you get it. But I'd prefer to hear from you."

"A girl always likes to hear that ... "

"A girl? (laughing ... ) Yes, a girl. Of course."

"Tell me a little more, then I'll tell you."

"Well, you are of course Greek through and through ... but you also have that little death transcendence, so ... "

"So ... ?"

I cupped her cheeks. "So you're the one I want to hear from. Let me hear from you ... "

She wagged. "To have so much apparent goodness, for so long, my Father is often suspicious of that. Yet apparent goodness is in your world the only way real goodness reveals itself, so shall we start there?"

pat pat

"One of my favorite yeses. Consider if he was a literature major, trapped in the change of cultures, wouldn't that mean ... "

She has much wisdom, though I remember little of it. I do remember that she was there, seeing what I saw.

I woke up with the sea foaming around my waist.

Obscure

Singing is so precise. More precise than anything else I've done. Far more precise than anything purely athletic. More precise than acting, con games, espionage. There errors can be inspirational. But comparisons are not the real gig. It's almost digital: it's either good, or it is certainly bad. It would be easier if there was only one way to sing. But much like the 7 different throws a quarterback must make, there are lots and lots and lots of ways to "place" your voice. And if you've spent so much time thinking different tones were where it's at and coming up with new ones and then working them back into what you've learned you've learned to place your voice all over your damn skull. This one's behind my eye; this one on the tip of my nose; this one in my brain stem. So you really don't have a native tone, you really don't have a natural placement. And nobody likes the sound of their own voice, so you try tone #18, hate it, move on, and round and round it goes. The only ones that work and people like are ones I hate ... yet still there is the pillar of fire ... and endless Romans 7.

At least I have that magic feeling ...

"Excuse me," I said.

"Sorry ... can get lost here in all the choices."

"Yes, cats just rule our lives, don't they."

"Well ... pussy is important."

(pause - she looks over)

"Depends on the pussy, now doesn't it?"

"Oh really?"

"Of course ... and the ass that's attached to it."

"The ass huh."

(says nothing)

"The ass is that important?"

"Yes, but you don't know what I mean."

"What do you mean?"

(stops - looks over)

"I mean the woman that's charged with wagging her pussy through the world. Is she a piece of ass? That's what it depends on."

"So I'm just a piece of ass?"

"Setting aside the word 'just', you are a piece of ass, yes."

"I don't think so."

"Your little tshirt and flat belly betray you, my dear. It's important to you to be thought of as a piece of ass. Those little ribs there didn't appear by accident, you work at it."

"Well ... "

"No well. You do."

"Yes ... I do."

"And a woman is only fulfilled when sometime during each day she is a piece of ass."

"Is that a line?"

"No ... it's a truth, an eternal one. Whether or not you agree with me, your jeans do."

She laughs. "You should talk to my husband."

"Ahh ... husband ... "

"Is that bad?"

Laughs. "It's bad for me."

"Doesn't necessarily need to be."

"Yeah ... I took an oath."

"To who?"

Laughs. "A completely unattainable piece of ass."

"Why then keep it?"

"Wow ... that's a graduate course in culture. But if teaching is the song, here's the best riff for you: it's important that you let your husband know that you are useable, otherwise ... "

"Otherwise?"

"Otherwise, if he's a good guy, he won't use you."

She says nothing.

"True useability is given, never taken. Thus endeth the lesson. Have a good day."

... and on to orange juice.
